15 % Cabinets Collection

The 15% Collection is the beginning of a larger furniture system that embodies the spirit of the so called Bolivarian Diaspora. Since 2008, the political and socio-economic situation in Venezuela has torn down a wealthy and resourceful country into an unsafe geography with a volatile economy, marching backwards with the revolution flag. This situation has forced the exodus of well prepared Venezuelans across the world, looking for a better, stable and secure context to grow, leaving everything behind. The current Diaspora effect left a visible empty spot in the country, 15% of the population has migrated, 15% of the social fabric is missing, 15% of my people –including me- have a constant feeling that something is missing, our land.

The Collection presents a visual interpretation of that 15%, by removing or enhancing 15% of the surface and constructive material of each piece, via acid showers that fade down the physical qualities of each element, without compromising the furniture function. A Cabinet system, constructed in solid wood wrapped in cotton and polyester fabric, where the indents created with subtraction of the 15% of the material plays as grip elements for pulling drawers and doors. The resting 85% of the cabinet’s fabric surface has been washed out using a desaturation process with acid. Rugs are also part of the collection, with 2 version, one where pure silk is tufted on 15% of the surface, leaving visible the supporting mesh , and the second version by removing the same percentage, leaving a de-saturated area. Currently in development there’s a marble table system and glass lighting fixtures, based on the same logic of removing and enhancing the 15%.
